The psilocybin mushrooms as alien intelligence manifest on Earth idea really gets going with Terence McKenna. Riffing on he and his brother's experience at La Chorrera - which he claimed was dictated to him directly by "the mushroom", which claimed to be of extraterrestrial origin, from spores drifting through space to colonize new planets:

"The mushroom which you see is part of my body given over to sex thrills and sunbathing...The occurrence of psilocybin and psilocin in the biosynthetic pathways of my living body opens for me and my symbiots the vision screens to many worlds." The mushroom (this riff McKenna pushes further when talking of his experience on DMT) enabled faster-than-light communication with all other mycelial bodies across the cosmos.

RAW, like myself, was greatly entertained by Terence's turn on quasi-directed Panspermia, but our model agnosticisms never allowed us to believe. But who knows, right?

Terence and Jaron Lanier also liked to riff on octopi as alien intelligence on Earth; both doing so in the early 1980s if not sooner. Mainstream popular science writing has caught on in a big way here only in the past 5 yrs.

Jacques Derrida proposes an interesting method for distribution of life in his book "The Post Card - From Socrates to Freud and Beyond".

On 8 June 1977 Derrida writes: "Imagine the day, as I have already, that we will be able to send sperm by post card, without going through a check drawn on some sperm bank, and that it remains living enough for the artificial insemination to yield fecundation, and even desire."

On 9 June 1977 Derrida continues: "Plato wants to emit. Seed, artificially, technically. That devil of a Socrates holds the syringe. To sow the entire earth, to send the same fertile card to everyone. A pancarte, a pan-card......"

I am reading a libertarian novel about the war on drugs, "Drug Lord" by Casey and Hunt, that starts out with a quote from McKenna. Will write about it soon.
