Dr. Richard Waterloo's favorite book

On X, Dr. Richard Waterloo posts (a short thread of two messages)  "This book for curious 'heads ... Though I love talking about books, the question 'What's your favorite book?' is such a tough one. Prometheus Rising, I'd say, is my favorite because of its profound impact, but few people would really be interested in it so I don't recommend it to casual readers. Great for 'heads."

This raises a couple of interesting points. Is Robert Anton Wilson so "way out" that it's difficult to recommend his books to ordinary readers, or would many people be  interested in him if only he could become better known? I do think that Prometheus Rising is a favorite for many RAW readers. (See this posting about the new Prometheus Rising hardcover and how it is the best-selling book in the Hilaritas catalog). 

I would be hard-pressed to name one favorite book. If I had to name a favorite RAW book, I would have to go with Illuminatus!, which to me is a very rich reading experience that started it all for me as a RAW fan. But I also have a particular fondness for Cosmic Trigger 2: Down to Earth, which as the title suggests is aimed at everyday human concerns that apply to many of us, and perhaps more approachable for readers new to RAW. I plan to read it  yet again soon. 

Richard Waterloo book update

 

Doctor Richard Waterloo has been hard at work on his book about reality tunnels. He's been teasing it with posts on X. Above is a self-portrait he posted this weekend, presumably showing himself hard at work on the manuscript.

It looks like the book will become available next year. I recently asked him for an update and he said, "Still working on the second revision, first good draft. Then I'll  need artists to work up the inside graphics/diagrams/images.

"Looking at 2024 sometime. Winter will give me time to get it straightened out."

'Reality Tunnels' book coming soon?

Dr. Richard Waterloo has been working on a book about reality tunnels, and on  his Twitter account he's been posting promotions and teases for it. Above is a cover prototype, and in a recent Tweet, he gave a glimpse of the book from a salesman's reality tunnel, e.g., "Written by a renowned philosopher and packed with engaging stories, mind-bending thought experiments and practical exercises ..."

Pretty sure I've mentioned Dr Richard Waterloo's Twitter before, but he's really stepped up the images.

Substacks of possible interest

The Erik Davis newsletter includes an "Ask Dr. D" section for paid subscribers. 

It seems to me that if Robert Anton Wilson were still with us, he would have a Substack newsletter. With the help of Scott Apel, he used to have a newsletter  called Trajectories. The Substack system is ideal for a writer who has a dedicated following.

We'll never know what form a RAW Substack would have taken, but I have noticed a number of Substack newsletters put out by RAW fans; here are ones that have come to my attention:

The Magnet -- I have a paid subscription to this one, done by Mark Frauenfelder of Boing Boing fame. 

Burning Shore -- The Erik Davis Substack. 

Octannual Manual -- The John Higgs newsletter, recently moved to Substack. 

Dank Philosophy -- Dr. Richard Waterloo's newsletter. He has a work in progress about reality tunnels. 

Mitch's Newsletter -- The Mitch Horowitz newsletter, with no content yet.
