Michael Johnson on TV, Pynchon and Wilson

A new issue of his Substack newsletter finds Michael Johnson writing about "Pynchon, Wilson, and TV: Irony, etc." and the love-hate relationship the writers had with the tube. There's a lot of discussion about Vineland, so many of you will want to take a look at Michael's piece.

I posted a comment, but I forgot to suggest that Robert Anton Wilson might have enjoyed the current heyday of TV streaming services that allow viewers to watch really good shows and movies without being interrupted by commercials. And as I remarked again yesterday, I'm always surprised that RAW never mentions "Twin Peaks" when he discusses his TV viewing habits.

Thanks for the notice, Tom!

As you pointed out in the comments, the deep, sorta hidden history of using the remote to tinker with perception while watching TV has a fascinating past. My piece here wouldda been way too long if I got into that. Maybe in the future. Or: some of you reading this could address that topic in your own blogs/Substacks/book writing?

Indeed with new technology allowing us to evade commercials. I often find out about some niche film that only shows on some other streaming service I don't have. So I download the app and start watching, only to be interrupted suddenly by a 5-second commercial, which my nervous system just can no longer tolerate. I often don't continue watching and tell myself it'll come around some day on Kanopy: my favorite source, which is FREE with a library card where I live.
