Marijuana legalization rollback fails in Massachusetts

It's not the election result that got the most attention, but I wanted to note that an effort to roll back marijuana legalization failed miserably in Massachusetts, with voters opposing it by about 3 to 1.

As Scott Sumner notes, this is despite a wave of propaganda in the media:

Puritan busybodies on both the left and the right are now telling us that marijuana legalization was a mistake that the public has come to regret. In Massachusetts, voters were recently given a chance to go back to the old system of putting young mothers in prison for selling a few ounces of pot. Here’s what they decide.

Don’t believe the Puritans.

Here is Jacob Sullum's report at Reason, which notes that support for legalization has generally risen in states that have approved it.

I read the wonderful writing of some RAW aficionados and sometimes get the impression of an unlimited ready-to-hand supply of no-cost, top-notch weed (even if they don't mention it explicitly, it seems evident in the writing). Spare a thought for us folks not only living in backwards Britain (where everything is illegal)... not only living in *boondocks* areas of backwards Britain, but constrained, er, socially, because of economic reasons of moving around the country over time, and not having an easy way to get around the stupid problem of supply. And I say this as someone who is currently 64 (cue the Beatles song).

To Brian's point: I live within about a five minute drive of a marijuana shop where cannabis, potent and reasonable priced and in a variety of forms never seen in the black market, is legally sold all day and fairly late into the night. As I lived most of my life in a legal situation identical to Brian's, in Oklahoma and Ohio, this fact astounds me every time I think about it.

I saw a guy with a “When I’m 64” t-shirt yesterday. I also turned 64 this year. The I Ching has 64 hexagrams. ☯️🪐🛸🖖👽
