Author John Crowley has died

Author John Crowley, the author of Little, Big, and other works has died. Here is the obituary in Locus.  And you can read the entry in the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction.

Now that I have gotten around to reading a couple of novels by Thomas Pynchon, John Crowley is probably the writer that I've meant to read for the longest time, without having gotten around to it. I read dozens of books a year, but there's always someone I should have gotten to by now. I suspect that for many other serious readers, there are authors you've always meant to read. As author Kim Stanley Robinson remarked when I interviewed him years ago, the culture is really vast.

Jesse Walker called Crowley "one of the best" and wrote, "He wrote one of my very favorite novels (THE SOLITUDES) and several more I admire enormously (BEASTS, ENGINE SUMMER, LITTLE BIG, LOVE & SLEEP, DAEMONOMANIA). His words open one of my own books."

Last night, I started rereading Little, Big. The only other John Crowley I've read is The Deep. I probably need to correct that.

He had a livejournal account I used to read and he was friendly and willing to engage in the comments. I’ll always remember a three way conversation I had with him and Thomas Disch there about the best way he could “sell out”.

I think a lot of RAW fans would find a lot to like in the Ægypt quartet. Time for a reread.

Mark Brown: you're ahead of my on this guy.

Tom: I'm right there with you: always meant to get to John Crowley, but haven't. Everything I read about him suggested he's one of my (our?) guys. But there's only so much time. I have added interest because he's often cited as an under-appreciated writer.
