Watching a classical pianist play can prove illuminating. Louis Zukofksy said that poetry works through sight, sound, and intellection. One might say the same of music.
Internal and external evidence: Internal might mean in the piece itself. External might mean drafts, letters, essays, etc.
I feel grateful for the work of critics. I feel very grateful for critics who write very well like Joseph Kerman and Leslie Fiedler. I feel grateful for people who edited old texts.
Tom, one nevers knows what one will get out of a book. This book may get people to listen to music that gives them a religious experience, and they may get far more out of it than I do.
Thanks for the couple of mentions, Tom. I put much time and self-rewarding effort into my increasingly infrequent blog posts (although it probably doesn't show) - I appreciate the generous links I still get from Bobby Campbell and yourself, while the Black Iron Algorithm continues to marginalize nobodies like me!
